Manage Pain

How does hypnosis help relieve pain?

Hypnosis blocks the perception of pain, just like pain killing drugs, but with out the sedation or side-effects.

Pain Management Hypnosis is endorsed by the National Institutes of Health and the Joint Commission Association for Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) as an adjunctive coping skill in the treatment of chronic pain. More recent studies have found the effectiveness of hypnosis for pain related to burns, rheumatoid arthritis, and reduction of anxiety associated with surgery. An analysis of 18 studies by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York revealed moderate to large pain relieving effects from hypnosis, supporting the effectiveness of hypnotic techniques for pain management. Studies have shown that people using hypnosis to manage their pain typically enjoy significant reductions in pain medication, most eliminating the need for medication altogether.

Some of the benefits of Pain Management Hypnosis include:

  • Cancer Pain. Research has shown that hypnosis can help manage cancer pain and helps to strengthen the immune system. It has shown to also decrease the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

  • Preparation for Surgery. According to Blue Shield of California, using hypnotic techniques 2-3 weeks prior to surgery was helpful for quicker recovery, less nausea, vomiting, and less pain.

  • Hypnosis has been shown effective in the management of many other types of pain including back pain, pain associated with childbirth, angioplasty, phantom limb pain, leukemia, and headaches, to name a few.
